Troix St. Troix and Di Phillips Maximize Yield by Growing Up
Troix St. Troix (pronounced "Troy") and Clearwater artist Di Phillips are adapting to the new economy through urban farming. The two lifelong friends are maximizing their crop through the use of thornless blackberries and raspberries. The plant will yield 40 to 100 berries per bunch in less than six weeks. The plants reach upward to seven feet in height, requiring less ground than the thorny variety. "We're expecting one to two bushels per plant," the farmers noted. The farming friends advise others to plant a garden. "It will help in lean times. And the berries are beautiful ornamentals."
Thornless berries produced by Doyle's Thornless Blackberries of Washington Indiana are in the Agriculture Hall of Fame. Mr. Doyle advises growers not to plant near potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant or strawberries.
